Already the 6th edition of the international codification courses, organised by the University of Defence (UNOB) and the National Codification Bureau (NCB) of the Czech Republic, with the all-round support of the Brno-based company AURA, took place in August and September 2023 in Brno. This time under the name "NCS College together 23", expressing the joint effort of students, lecturers, moderators, program and IT managers and others who participated in the preparation of logisticians and codifiers involved in national and international codification processes within the NATO Codification System.

The NATO Codification System (NCS) is a uniform and common system for identification, classification and stock numbering of materiel used by armed forces, so called Items of Supply. It is designed to achieve maximum effectiveness in logistics support and to facilitate materiel data management. The system is used by more than 60 NATO and non-NATO countries worldwide. One of the outputs of NCS is the largest database of codified materiel items in the world called the NATO Master Catalogue of References for Logistics (NMCRL) containing over 17 million NATO Stock Numbers (NSNs) and info about 2.9 million manufacturers and vendors.

Last year was really challenging for our company, but also interesting and varied. I don’t know whether we are the biggest Czech exporter of the military information systems. However, I can confirm that thelast year in cooperation with NSPA – the NATO Support and Procurement Agency – we gained the 20th customer who uses our information system for support of codification MC CATALOGUE, MCC in short, that we have developed and provide it to countries involved in the NATO Codifica­ tion System – NCS. The newest MCC user is the Jordanian Armed Forces.

It has been 15 years since the founder of AURA, Jan Engelsmann (he would have celebrated his 70thbirthday before the end of this year), was making a decision with his son Filip, current general director of AURA, whether to continue in making a good use of experience gained in the previous years in the field of the information systems for military logistics or to focus more on civil section in the nextperiod. The decision was to continue in the same way and develop AURA’s own action further ina specific field of defence and safety!

After the last year’s Australian and Swedish success when AURA provided its software for support of NATO Codification MC CATALOGUE for the Armed Forces of both countries, AURA has achieved another superb successes with this logistic information system in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Republic of South Africa and in Japan. MC CATALOGUE, fully developed according to the NATO Codification System (NCS), is currently the most widely used codification software, which is used in different modifications in 19 countries on 5 continents.

Readers of the past editions of the Czech Defence Industry & Security Review and the Defence and Security Industry Review could so far notice mainly the Information System for Logistics (ISL) in conjunction with the Brno-based company AURA and presentation of its products. The ISL, awarded by the top prestigious prize of the international press jury at the Prague fair Future Forces 2014, has been used by thousands of AFCR (Armed Forces of the Czech Republic) personnel and MoD employees for seventeen years. One of the modules of this system which has stand-alone features owingto a special technology, is the information system for materiel codification MC CATALOGUE. And it is this very item which brought AURA significantsuccess at international markets.

The Czech University of Defence and the AC/135 jointly organised the 2nd NATO Codification Sys-tem (NCS) College in Brno, Czech Republic, on 25 August to 1 September, 2014. The purpose of this event is to train, in biennial cycles, managers and logisticians in administration of codification pro­ cesses as well as codifiers in execution of specific codification activities. The NCS College is prima-rily designed for codification personnel of nations participating in the NATO Codification System (currently 67 nations) and those waiting for admis-sion into this community. This year ́s Course for Managers & Logisticians (25 to 29 August) and Course for Codifiers (1 to 19 September) was at-tended by students representing 12 nations from all over the world.

AURA implemented its first projects for the military in 1991 employing its knowledge and experience in logistic SW projects tailored for the commercial sector. Gradually, the company specialised in infor-mation systems for military logistics. It extended significantly its operations in this area once Cze­ choslovakia ceased to exist and the Czech Republic launched measures to join NATO. AURA ́s SW applications are also essential for logistic support of Czech units in peace operations abroad. The com­ pany is successful also in exporting its products and services. Currently, AURA is delivering military logistic software into 12 countries.

Company AURA, s.r.o. (Ltd.) hosted the final examining proceedings related to the triennial Defence Research Project “Applied Research of Integrated Logistic Support System TechnologyBased on Automated Data Exchange between the Defence Industry and the Defence Department” – the DRP EXCHANGE in short. The session was attended by the AURA ́s project team, representatives of the defence logistic branch and the University of Defence and it took place in Brno, Czech Republic, in the lastweek of March. The project examined the options of OTD (Open Technical Dictionary) use when codifying assets (materiel) and services within the defence department and how thistechnology might be applied in acquisition pro­cesses of assets and services.

The University of Defence in co-operation with the US Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) Logistics Information Service and the Czech National Codification Bureau (CZE NCB), and with organisational and technical assistance of the AURA Company organised the 1st NATO Codification SystemCollege in the Moravian city of Brno on 27 August - 21 September. The NCS College was also supported by the Allied Committee AC/135 – Group ofNational Directors on Codification, National Co­ dification Bureaus of France, Austria and Slo­vakia, NSPA (former NAMSA), Multinational Logistics Coordination Centre (MLCC) and the Defence and Security Industry Association of the Czech Republic (DSIA CR).

Dear readers, the first issue of this year’s CDIS Review informed you that the AURA, s.r.o. (ltd.) had been awarded the title “Company of 2011” at the magazine’s annual meeting in January. The principal reason for such a tribute is the company’s achievements in development and implementation of codification software in compliance with NATO standards. The company was presented by Mr. Filip Engelsmann, General Director, who agreed to give the military and civilian public the specifics of this business plus some of proposals to enhance co-operation with addressed entities of public administration and private sphere both at home and abroad.

Our company AURA has been established in 1989, even before the Velvet Revolution, as a producer co-operative. Within the limits of the then era, a group of developers decided to start an independent business, they overcame the bureaucratic obstacles and they executed a series of inland and foreign projects. Among other things, we developed software for inventory management or warehouse control systems. Also, we delivered related hardware (meaning computers, printers and barcode scanners) for our warehouse systems.
